About us

Introduction

Bangladesh Association Glasgow (BAG) was established in 1971 during the war of independence of Bangladesh. For decades, Bangladeshis in Glasgow have been participating in activities involving not only the Bangla speaking community but the greater Scottish community.

There are various different organisations amongst Bangladeshis in Glasgow working together to represent both Bangladeshi and Scottish culture. Dawatul Islam is a religious organisation providing the Islamic religious activities in Glasgow. Bangla Biddya Niketon is another Bangla language school in South Glasgow. BAG aims to foster cooperation and unity among these organisations to enhance social cohesion and build connections with the mainstream Scottish society.

President's Message

We have witnessed significant achievements in recent years, with cultural, social, and well-being activities organized by BAG in collaboration with our esteemed partners, including Glasgow Museums, Glasgow Life, and the British Council. BAG is more than just an organization; it represents a lifestyle, a notion, and a philosophy that is accessible to everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, age, cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. At BAG, we hold dear values such as benevolence, truth, righteousness, and gratitude. Our aim is to foster an environment where self-egos dissolve, and truth and divinity prevail, enlightening both present and future generations with fundamental human virtues: respect, acceptance, consideration, appreciation, listening, openness, affection, empathy, and love for one another. Today, as we gather, we also pay tribute to the martyrs of 1971 in the month of December. Let us continue to share these human attributes in the years ahead and beyond. President, BAG.

MEMORi

Dr Saif Khan from BAG, of Glasgow’s small Bangladeshi community, talks movingly about the role Simon Sharkey and the NTS have played in enabling the community to reach out to the rest of the city and the world with their powerful first-ever show MEMORi, based on vivid personal memories of Bangladesh’s traumatic war of independence 40 years ago – memories carried in silence, until now, by three distinguished members of the community.
