44th Victory day

This year BAG celebrated the 44th Victory day of Bangladesh. We chose to observe this special day of every Bangladeshis life in the unique setting of the cargo deck of "˜The Tall Ship"

This year's observance was an informal, family day. Emphasis was on educating the children on the history of Bangladesh through sharing our personal experiences during the war. The event was managed by Social Welfare Secretary Barrister Samiya Haque-Khan.

There was an exhibition of books on history of Bangladesh at the entrance. The programme began with a short yet powerful documentary on the birth of the country collaged by General Secretary of BAG, Dr. Tareq Abdullah.

Dr. Saif Khan, Mr. Zohurul Haque, Mrs. Sadia Ahmed and Mrs. Samiya Haque-Khan told the story of Bangladesh's struggle to the children with anecdotes of their own families. Helped by the environment of our venue, as often, some of the stories were tragic and transported story-tellers and audience into the troubled times.

The last part of the event was sharing of personal experiences during the war and discussion, while children drew their vision of Bangladesh.

Mr. Sarwar Hassan, Dr. Shahjahan Mridha, Dr. Nirmal Dhar MBE and Dr. Bryan Whitty, a Scottish national who worked in Chondroghona paper-mill in 1971, shared their experiences, views and thoughts as the other guests participated in the discussion. At the end the children displayed their drawing on Bangladesh and was given certificate by Mr. Sarwar Hossain, President of the association.

We arranged some of the best pictures to be kept as display in the Tall Ship premises for a week to raise awareness about 16th December and also try to collect fund for our association in the process.

BAG was supported by the teachers and students of Bangla Bidya Niketon in our effort.
